Rejection and Tolerance after Liver Transplantation
Summary
The first aim of this thesis is to investigate biomarkers by which operational immunological tolerance can be recognized and the consequences of complete immunosuppressive drug weaning, by comparing tolerant liver transplant recipients to completely matched groups of other liver transplant recipients and/or healthy controls. The second aim is to assess whether rejection episodes after liver transplantation can be prevented by changing a standard retransplantation protocol or by proteomic screening of soluble markers that could predict an upcoming late acute rejection. The research covers clinical benefits of weaning, the development of fibrosis in tolerant recipients, and the characterization of circulating immune cells and gene expression profiles.
