A study in dissertations

This study examines the evolving nature of doctoral dissertations in the Netherlands. Historically rooted in academic tradition, the Dutch dissertation has developed into both a scholarly and design-driven artifact. Universities prescribe detailed formatting rules, yet candidates retain space for personal and visual expression. In recent years, professional typesetters and studios have become integral to the process, translating complex research into refined, print-ready publications. This work explores how academic conventions, typographic design, and digital workflows interact in the creation of the modern Dutch dissertation. Interviews with designers, review of university guidelines, and visual analysis of recent theses reveal how form and function continue to coexist within Dutch academic publishing.
