Physical (in)activity, nutritional status and muscle status in older adults

improved physical and functional performance during geriatric rehabilitation, indicating that even in these highly inactive inpatients, more i-PA is suggested to be beneficial. To conclude, my thesis adds to the evidence that i-SB and i-PA behaviours and nutritional status are two important targets to improve muscle status. Specific recommendations for the total amount, frequency and dose with regard to these modifiable factors are limited, specifically in older adults during vulnerable periods of life (for example during geriatric rehabilitation). Future studies including a simultaneous assessment of i-SB, i-PA, nutritional status and muscle status are required for a better understanding of these interrelations and dose-response relationships. Subsequently, specific intervention studies are needed to investigate the impact on functional performance and independence, including the monitoring of these interventions in clinical practice. Objective assessment methods are required to quantify the beneficial effects of i-SB, i-PA and nutritional status on muscle status, bringing us one step closer to decision making for effective tailored interventions: let’s move towards objective assessment methods in clinical practice!
