Milk Quality and Mastitis Control Strategies in Indonesian Smallholder Dairy Farms: An Integrated Epidemiological and Economic Analysis

Samenvatting

This research investigates milk quality, mastitis management, and economic performance on Indonesian smallholder dairy farms through an integrated epidemiological and economic analysis. The study found that farmers' awareness of milk quality parameters like Somatic Cell Count (SCC) and Total Plate Count (TPC) is generally low, with cooperatives playing a vital role in increasing this awareness. Key risk factors for high SCC and TPC included manure removal frequency, lack of mastitis treatment training, and poor hygiene practices. Economically, a unit decrease in the natural logarithm of SCC was associated with an increased gross margin of €0.73 per 100 kg of milk. Furthermore, bio-economic modeling revealed that clinical and subclinical mastitis impose significant costs on smallholders, but strategies such as post-milking teat disinfection are cost-efficient interventions. The thesis concludes that improving udder health through targeted training and monitoring can significantly enhance the profitability and sustainability of smallholder dairy production in Indonesia.
