Plant Pixel

The research addresses the challenge of urban heat stress by developing 'Plant Pixel,' a bio-inspired modular living wall system. Utilizing a Research Through Design (RTD) methodology across five distinct phases, the author focused on creating a solution that is both low in embodied carbon and economically viable. The study explores material optimization using recycled components, such as PVC-U and textile fibers, to improve hydrological and structural performance. Long-term microclimatic monitoring in a temperate climate revealed that the system significantly reduces near-wall temperatures during summer heatwaves and provides wind protection during winter. The work concludes that such circular-economy-based greening systems are effective tools for urban climate adaptation.
