Dit proefschrift onderzoekt de aard van deze relatie tussen individuen, sectoren en landen met behulp van een breed scala aan databronnen. De voordelen of zorgen over de impact van technologische verandering op inkomens hangen af van het perspectief van de analyse. Binnen veel Europese landen is automatisering de belangrijkste drijfveer voor de stijgende ongelijkheid, en dit effect wordt veroorzaakt door de snel veranderende samenstelling van de beroepsbevolking. Op industrieel niveau is kennisdiversiteit een belangrijke factor bij het verklaren van loonverschillen tussen sectoren - individuen die werkzaam zijn in kennisdiverse sectoren verdienen doorgaans meer, en dit geldt in het bijzonder voor beroepen die meer sociale en interpersoonlijke vaardigheden vereisen. Op nationaal niveau hebben technologische vermogens een positief effect op het verklaren van economische groeicijfers, met name voor lagelonenlanden. Technologische verandering kan positieve en onbedoelde negatieve effecten hebben, en inzicht in de context waarin technologische verandering gunstig of schadelijk is, kan beleidsmakers helpen.","summary":"Recently, there is a growing concern about the relationship between technological change and income inequality. This thesis investigates the nature of this relationship between individuals, industries and nations using a breadth of data sources. The benefits or concerns of the impact of technological change on income depends on the perspective of analysis. Within many European countries, the main driver of rising inequality is due to automation, and this effect is caused by the fast-changing composition of the workforce. While, at the industry level, one factor that is important in explaining wage differences between industries is knowledge diversity - individuals who work in knowledge diverse industries tend to earn more, and it is especially true for occupations that have more social and interpersonal skills. At the national level, technological capabilities has a positive effect on explaining economic growth rates, particularly for lower income countries.
