Over the past two decades, 3D technologies have become increasingly prominent across museums, cultural institutions and academic disciplines, enabling the digitisation of artefacts and sites as well as the production of complex reconstructed environments. However, while these developments have expanded the possibilities for interpretation, storytelling and analysis, they have also exposed significant challenges for scholarly practice. Existing infrastructures tend to prioritise the preservation and dissemination of 3D data rather than the situated interpretive and evidentiary work that makes such material meaningful as scholarship. Moreover, the interfaces through which 3D work is created and encountered often reflect technical rather than humanistic priorities, limiting the visibility of paradata (i.e., process documentation), the clarity of argumentation and the capacity for critical assessment.

Against this backdrop, this thesis asks the question: What infrastructural and interface conditions enable 3D humanities scholarship to be recognised as legitimate and sustainable scholarly contributions? Three sub-questions further structure the investigation by exploring community requirements for 3D dissemination, the values and assumptions embedded in interface design and the practical and communicative challenges that arise when using 3D research interfaces to construct multimodal scholarly narratives.

To address these questions, the thesis combines conceptual analysis, empirical investigation and praxis-based authoring of 3D scholarly works. The first strand examines the current landscape of 3D scholarly infrastructures, including the effects of commercial shifts such as the migration of Sketchfab to its ‘Fab’ marketplace. This study combines an environment scan with qualitative analysis to reveal widespread concerns about the precarity of 3D data hosted on commercial platforms, the inadequacy of documentation standards and the absence of analytical, annotative and citation mechanisms needed for rigorous scholarly reuse. At the same time, these findings illustrate that usability, reliability and an accessible authoring workflow are essential for community adoption. The research argues that sustainability cannot be achieved solely through technical robustness; it depends equally on cultivating communities who understand, trust and value the infrastructures they use.

The second strand considers interface design as a form of performative materiality. By examining a corpus of 3D research platforms and analysing them through persona-based scenarios, the thesis demonstrates that 3D interfaces actively shape how scholars interpret and use 3D material. Interface tools encode assumptions about expertise, methodological norms and intended modes of interaction, positioning users into particular epistemic perspectives. When these assumptions clash with the mental models or disciplinary practices of researchers, interfaces can inadvertently constrain interpretive possibilities or obscure essential scholarly information such as provenance, uncertainty or methodological choices. The analysis shows that critical digital literacy is essential for navigating these environments and that clearer, more transparent design logics are required for enabling the assessment of relevance and authenticity of 3D heritage.

The third strand explores the practical implications of these insights through two case study 3DSEs created within the PURE3D infrastructure using the Smithsonian Voyager framework, an open-source 3D authoring and viewing environment. The first case study, produced in collaboration with the Contested Memories project, focuses on multimodal storytelling and highlights both the expressive potential and the navigational challenges of crafting narrative structures in this particular 3D interface. Survey and focus group feedback underscores the need for consistent semantic cues and intuitive orchestration of multimedia components. The second case study, centred on the concept of paradata, analyses how edition authors express 3D creation processes and methodological decisions within Voyager’s constraints. This analysis is complemented by a 3DSE demonstrating the author’s own reconstruction of the late Roman castellum of Maastricht, showing how paradata and interpretive reasoning can be integrated directly into the spatial experience of a 3D environment. Together, these case studies illustrate that 3D scholarship is fundamentally co-produced by authors, data, and interface affordances, and that the meaningful communication of scholarly argumentation depends on the careful calibration of tools, narrative structures and user experience.

Synthesised across the thesis, the findings identify four essential interface conditions for sustainable 3D scholarship: feasibility, flexibility, legibility and experientiality. Feasibility refers to reducing barriers to entry so that scholars with diverse technical backgrounds can ingest, document and publish 3D material without excessive cognitive or technical burden. Flexibility describes an interface’s ability to accommodate varied research methods, disciplinary norms and heritage contexts while enabling authors to articulate different forms of interpretive and evidentiary argumentation. Legibility concerns transparency and interpretability: interfaces must enable users to trace provenance, understand uncertainties and follow scholarly reasoning across multimodal layers. Experientiality captures the need for interfaces that support embodied, interactive and analytical engagement within the 3D space, enabling users not merely to view 3D material but to think and reason through it.

The thesis concludes that sustainable 3D scholarship depends on the mutual reinforcement of infrastructure and interface. While infrastructures must provide the technical foundations for preservation, access and reuse, it is interfaces that determine how scholarly expression unfolds and how 3D heritage is conceived, evaluated and integrated into wider research practices. Ultimately, the future of 3D scholarship relies on strengthening the relationships between technical systems, design logics and the communities who create, use and assess these works. By foregrounding paradata, promoting critical digital literacy and designing interfaces that support meaningful scholarly performances, the field can ensure that 3D heritage becomes not only accessible and reusable but also a legitimate and enduring component of the humanities.
["GET
