Het werk is verdeeld in twee delen.\n\nHet eerste deel analyseert het Multi-Scale Model (MSM), een willekeurig netwerkmodel dat voortkomt als het vaste punt van een renormalisatieprocedure waarbij knooppunten worden samengevoegd tot superknooppunten, terwijl de functionele vorm van de connection probability behouden blijft. Het MSM vereist dat de fitnesses van de nodes een heavy-tailed verdeling met oneindige verwachtingswaarde volgen, en deze eigenschap geeft het model een aantal opmerkelijke kenmerken.\n\nHoofdstuk 2 karakteriseert het spectrum van de bogenmatrix van het MSM. De dominante eigenwaarden groeien als de vierkantswortel van de netwerkgrootte, wisselen van teken, en liggen op de snijpunten van de re\u00eble as met een logaritmische spiraal in het complexe vlak, analytisch gekarakteriseerd via de Gammafunctie. De bijbehorende eigenvectoren vertonen log-periodieke oscillaties als functie van de node fitness, een kenmerk van discrete zelfgelijkvormigheid. De bulk van het spectrum strekt zich uit tot dezelfde schaal als de outlier eigenwaarden, in schril contrast met het gedrag van finite-mean modellen.\n\nHoofdstuk 3 bewijst dat het MSM van nature een niet-triviale clustering-functie genereert zonder gebruik te maken van een onderliggende geometrische ruimte. In het infinite-mean regime heeft nagenoeg iedere node, op de hoogst verbonden hubs na, een local clustering coefficient dicht bij \u00e9\u00e9n, en wordt het netwerk in precieze zin asymptotisch volledig geclusterd. De analyse onthult ook een gebrek aan self-averaging in de gemiddelde clustering coefficient, een gevolg van de heavy-tailed fitness-verdeling.\n\nHet tweede deel ontwikkelt een renormalisatietheorie voor willekeurige netwerkmodellen met gecorreleerde links. De centrale observatie van Hoofdstuk 4 is dat het marginaliseren van een gecorreleerd netwerkmodel over ongeobserveerde variabelen equivalent is aan het uitvoeren van een decimatiestap in de renormalization group. Deze equivalentie wordt geformaliseerd binnen het kader van exponential random graph models, en wordt gebruikt om exacte RG-flow-vergelijkingen af te leiden, universaliteitsklassen te identificeren, en methoden te ontwikkelen voor netwerkinferentie met ontbrekende gegevens.\n\nHoofdstuk 5 lost de RG-vergelijkingen exact op voor eendimensionale keten topologie\u00ebn, en breidt de analyse uit naar modellen met schaarse en uniforme wanorde. De exacte oplossingen worden ge\u00efnterpreteerd in termen van peer effects, preferential attachment, susceptibility en reinforcement-dynamica.\n\nHoofdstuk 6 analyseert de klasse van tweede-orde willekeurige netwerkmodellen, waarnaar de meeste gecorreleerde modellen stromen onder renormalisatie wanneer hogere-orde interacties irrelevant zijn. Er wordt aangetoond dat second-order modellen in volledige algemeenheid kunnen worden opgelost door de berekening van de partitiefunctie te reduceren tot de diagonalisatie van een link-adjacency matrix. Deze aanpak onthult een rijke fasestructuur, legt een verband met algebra\u00efsche graaftheorie, en biedt een verenigend kader voor het oplossen van een brede familie van link-gecorreleerde netwerkmodellen.","summary":"This thesis studies the renormalization of random network models, with a focus on the topological and algebraic structures that emerge when networks are coarse-grained or partially observed. The work is divided into two parts.\n\nThe first part analyses the Multi-Scale Model (MSM), a random graph model that arises as the fixed point of a renormalization procedure based on aggregating nodes into supernodes while preserving the functional form of the connection probability. The MSM requires that node fitnesses follow a heavy-tailed stable distribution with infinite mean, and this unusual distributional property endows the model with a number of remarkable features.\n\nChapter 2 characterises the spectrum of the MSM adjacency matrix. The leading eigenvalues are shown to grow as the square root of the network size, to alternate in sign, and to lie at the intersections of the real axis with a logarithmic spiral in the complex plane, characterised analytically in terms of the Gamma function. The corresponding eigenvectors display log-periodic oscillations in the node fitness, a hallmark of discrete scale invariance. The bulk of the spectrum extends to the same scale as the outlier eigenvalues, in stark contrast with the behaviour of finite-mean models.\n\nChapter 3 proves that the MSM naturally generates a non-trivial clustering function without any appeal to an underlying geometric space. In the infinite-mean regime, all nodes except the highest-degree hubs have local clustering coefficients close to one, and the network becomes asymptotically fully clustered in a precise sense. The analysis also reveals a lack of self-averaging in the average clustering coefficient, a consequence of the heavy-tailed fitness distribution.\n\nThe second part develops a renormalization theory for random network models in which edges are correlated. The central observation of Chapter 4 is that marginalising a correlated network model over unobserved variables is equivalent to performing a decimation step in the renormalization group sense. This equivalence is formalised within the framework of exponential random graph models, and is used to derive exact RG flow equations, to identify universality classes, and to develop network inference methods that incorporate uncertainty about missing data in a principled way.\n\nChapter 5 solves the RG equations exactly for one-dimensional chain topologies, and extends the analysis to models with sparse and uniform disorder. The exact solutions are interpreted in terms of several network-relevant phenomena, including peer effects, preferential attachment, susceptibility, and reinforcement dynamics.\n\nChapter 6 analyses the class of second-order random network models, to which most correlated models flow under renormalization when higher-order interactions are irrelevant. It is shown that second-order models can be solved in full generality by reducing the computation of the partition function to the diagonalization of a link-adjacency matrix. This approach reveals a rich phase structure, establishes a connection with algebraic graph theory, and provides a unified framework for solving a wide family of edge-correlated network models.","auteur":"Alessio Catanzaro","auteur_slug":"alessio-catanzaro","publicatiedatum":"10 september 2026","taal":"EN","url_flipbook":"https:\/\/ebook.proefschriftmaken.nl\/ebook\/alessiocatanzaro?iframe=true","url_download_pdf":"https:\/\/ebook.proefschriftmaken.nl\/download\/5fc2863c-23e7-4505-9013-2957f1d97d10\/highres","url_epub":"","ordernummer":"19579","isbn":"","doi_nummer":"","naam_universiteit":"Universiteit Leiden","afbeeldingen":26902,"video_url":"","podcast_url":"","naam_student:":"","binnenwerk":"","universiteit":"Universiteit Leiden","cover":"","afwerking":"","cover_afwerking":"","design":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.proefschriftmaken.nl\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/us_portfolio\/26901","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.proefschriftmaken.nl\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/us_portfolio"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.proefschriftmaken.nl\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/us_portfolio"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.proefschriftmaken.nl\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/26902"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.proefschriftmaken.nl\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=26901"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"university_us_portfolio","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.proefschriftmaken.nl\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/university_us_portfolio?post=26901"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
