Dit leidt tot een belangrijke uitdaging: hoe kunnen zorgprofessionals inzicht ontwikkelen in de impact van hun woorden, handelen en gedrag als exposure voor een ervaring moeilijk beschikbaar is?\n\nDit proefschrift onderzoekt hoe virtual reality (VR) betekenisvolle ervaringsgerichte leermogelijkheden kan cre\u00ebren om communicatievaardigheden in de zorg te trainen. In acht studies werden VR-gebaseerde leerervaringen ontwikkeld en ge\u00ebvalueerd voor communicatie in stressvolle situaties, therapeutische communicatie vanuit het pati\u00ebntenperspectief en teamcultuur op de operatiekamer.\n\nEen centraal uitgangspunt was het cre\u00ebren van immersieve ervaringen waarmee lerenden perspectieven en situaties kunnen ervaren die moeilijk toegankelijk zijn binnen traditionele onderwijsvormen. Voor communicatie in acute situaties werd dit bereikt door middel van een interactieve, door een trainer begeleide multiplayer-VR-simulatie. Voor therapeutische communicatie en teamcultuur werden pati\u00ebnt-embodied en zorgprofessional-embodied VR-ervaringen ontwikkeld, waarmee lerenden de zorg vanuit verschillende perspectieven konden beleven.\n\nDoor middel van gebruikersgericht ontwerp, mixed-methods onderzoek en evaluatie binnen de klinische onderwijscontext laat dit proefschrift zien dat VR impliciete ervaringen kan transformeren naar expliciete leermogelijkheden. This creates an important challenge: how can healthcare professionals develop insight into the impact of their words, actions, and behaviours when such learning experiences are not readily accessible?\n\nThis thesis explores how virtual reality (VR) can create meaningful experiential learning opportunities to train communication skills in healthcare. Across eight studies, VR-based educational experiences were developed and evaluated for high-stress communication, therapeutic communication through patient perspectives, and team culture in the operating room.\n\nA central approach was the creation of immersive experiences that allow learners to encounter perspectives and situations that are difficult to access during traditional training. For high-stress communication in acute care, this was achieved through a multiplayer, interactive, trainer-led virtual simulation. For therapeutic communication and team culture, this was achieved through patient-embodied and clinician-embodied VR experiences, enabling learners to experience healthcare from different perspectives.\n\nThrough user-centred design, mixed-methods research, and evaluation in clinical education settings, this thesis demonstrates that VR can transform implicit experiences into explicit learning opportunities.
