FYSICA-ANALYSE IN ATLAS

68% of 95%).

µ_MC_VV = 1.00 +0.35 -0.32, µ_GPR_VV = 1.00 +0.17 -0.16. (S.1)

σ_MC_VV = 194 +68 -62 pb, σ_GPR_VV = 194 +33 -31 pb, (S.2)

IS THE STANDARD MODEL ‘THE MODEL’?

At least once, everyone has wondered: what is everything made of? This question was asked centuries ago and is still asked today. By looking more closely at the world around us, we have discovered that everything is made of atoms, which in turn are made of electrons and nuclei. The nuclei are made of protons and neutrons, which themselves are made of quarks. We have also discovered that these particles interact through fundamental forces – electromagnetic, weak, and strong forces – which are mediated by other particles called bosons. The Higgs boson stands out as a special particle, responsible for giving mass to the elementary particles apart from the neutrinos. Our knowledge of these particles and their interactions is mathematically described by the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics, which provides the most complete and accurate description of the microscopic world to date. Figure S.1 shows the particles of the SM and their properties.

But is the SM the final answer to our question? The SM emerged in the 1970s from decades of theoretical and experimental work, and it has been successfully tested and confirmed by many experimental results. The discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 marked the completion of the SM particle spectrum. Yet, several open questions remain. Why is there so much more matter than antimatter in the Universe? What are dark matter and dark energy? Why do neutrinos have mass, and why are they so light? How can gravity, the only fundamental force not described by the SM, be incorporated? While these questions remain unanswered, the particle physics community continues its quest to address them.

LOOKING FOR ANSWERS

These questions can be addressed with two complementary approaches. The first is direct searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In most cases, BSM theories predict the existence of new heavy particles that can be searched for in data collected by particle physics experiments. The second approach focuses on more precise measurements of the SM parameters, such as particle masses, cross sections, or coupling strengths. Precise measurements can reveal small deviations from the SM predictions, potentially pointing toward directions for further exploration.

While the first approach is model-dependent and involves searching directly for resonances, or spikes in the data caused by the presence of new heavy particles (Figure S.2, left), the Effective Field Theory (EFT) framework provides a more model-independent way to interpret precision measurements, enabling indirect searches for new physics (Figure S.2, right). With the EFT framework, we can search for small deviations from SM predictions in the tails of kinematic distributions without assuming a specific BSM model. In particle physics, these tails correspond to the maximum energy currently accessible at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the most powerful particle accelerator ever built.

THE TOOLS REQUIRED

Most particles have very short lifetimes and decay into other particles almost immediately. They are also extremely small, making direct observation impossible. To study them, we must create them in a controlled environment and detect their decay products. The LHC and the ATLAS detector at CERN provide the tools to do exactly that.

The LHC accelerates protons or heavy ions to very high energies and collides them, producing an abundance of particles, including those predicted by the SM and possibly new ones. The outcome of each collision is referred to as an event. The ATLAS detector is a large, complex machine that surrounds the collision point and detects the particles produced in collisions, like a giant camera. It consists of several layers of subdetectors, each designed to identify and measure specific signatures resulting from particle interactions with the detector material.

When searching for a particular particle, we need to know how it decays and what signatures it leaves in the detector. For example, the W boson can decay into a charged lepton and a neutrino, or into a pair of quarks. Each of these final states produces a distinct signature in the detector. A charged lepton leaves a track in the inner detector and deposits energy in the calorimeters, while the neutrino escapes undetected, but its presence can be inferred from the imbalance of the transverse momentum in the event. Quarks, on the other hand, hadronize and produce sprays of particles called jets, which also deposit energy in the calorimeters. By reconstructing these signatures, we can identify the particles produced in the collision and study their properties.

PHYSICS ANALYSIS IN ATLAS

The goal of any physics analysis is to select events that are likely to contain the signal of interest while suppressing background events that can mimic it. This is done by applying a series of selection criteria that define specific analysis regions. Signal regions are designed to be enriched in signal events, exploiting the expected kinematic properties of the signal. Control regions are enriched in specific background contributions and are used to constrain the background modeling.

To avoid introducing biases, the analysis in ATLAS is performed in a blinded manner, meaning that the data in the signal regions are not examined until the analysis strategy is finalized and all the necessary checks are completed. To obtain the expected results, an Asimov dataset is used, which is a simulated dataset containing the expected signal and background contributions. This allows the statistical analysis to be performed and the expected sensitivity to be evaluated without looking at the data in the signal regions.

The core of the statistical analysis is a likelihood fit that compares the simulated predictions for signal and background to the (Asimov) data. The fit determines a confidence interval - a range of values that, under repeated experiments, would contain the true value of a parameter of interest, such as the signal strength discussed below, with a predefined probability (e.g., 68% or 95%). This probability is known as the confidence level.

An important component of any physics analysis is the treatment of uncertainties. They are divided into two categories. Statistical uncertainties arise from the limited number of events in the data or simulation. Systematic uncertainties originate from imperfect knowledge of the detector, the physics models, or the simulation; for example, in energy calibrations, identification efficiencies, or background modeling. Both types are incorporated into the likelihood fit as nuisance parameters, allowing their impact to be constrained by the data in the analysis regions.

FOLLOWING THE DIBOSON TRAIL

The analysis presented in this thesis focuses on diboson states, or pairs of SM bosons. Specifically, it considers VV or Vh pairs, where V is either W± or Z0 boson and h denotes the SM Higgs boson. Many BSM theories that address the open questions of the SM also predict the existence of new heavy resonances decaying into VV/Vh pairs, making the search for such signatures particularly compelling. Additionally, VV final states can be directly produced in proton-proton collisions and are well-described by the SM. Precise measurements of these processes could reveal discrepancies with SM predictions, providing valuable insights into the underlying physics. The Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) framework is also used to perform indirect searches. Thus, the VV/Vh semileptonic analysis combines the two approaches discussed above: the resonance search and the precision measurement. The analysis is performed using the full Run 2 dataset collected by the ATLAS detector, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV.

This work focuses specifically on semileptonic final states, where one boson (V) decays into a pair of leptons and the other (V or h) decays into a pair of quarks. These decays provide a good balance between signal yield and background contamination, making them an optimal choice for both the resonance search and the measurement of SM diboson production. These semileptonic final states are the primary targets of the VV/Vh semileptonic analysis selection. Figure S.3 shows a X → Wh → µνbb candidate event in the ATLAS detector.

In addition to these signal targets, a comprehensive set of requirements is established to separate the signal from background processes. Designing and optimizing the reconstructed signatures (or physics objects) and the event selection are among the key challenges of any physics analysis, including this one. The analysis strategy is shared between the resonance and the measurement parts. Events are categorized into three leptonic channels based on the number of charged leptons in the final state: 0-lepton, 1-lepton, and 2-lepton. Two types of control regions are defined to constrain the dominant backgrounds: mass-sideband control regions for the V+jets background and top control regions for top-quark backgrounds. In total, the resonance search part of the VV/Vh semileptonic analysis uses 64 signal regions and 54 control regions. For the measurement part, regions with limited sensitivity are excluded or merged, resulting in 3 signal regions and 4 control regions.

RESULTS

The VV/Vh semileptonic analysis remains blinded at the time of writing of this thesis. All results presented here are obtained using a conditional Asimov dataset that incorporates information about data in the control regions after performing the control regions-only fit.

Search for new BSM resonances decaying into dibosons

The resonance search part is performed in the diboson mass range from 300 GeV to 5 TeV. Results are interpreted in the context of several BSM theories: the Heavy Vector Triplet (HVT) model, the bulk Randall-Sundrum (RS) model, and the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM). A binned likelihood fit is performed to the conditional Asimov dataset in two fit configurations, depending on the signal benchmark. Both configurations include a selection of signal regions and all control regions. From the fit, expected upper limits at 95% confidence level are obtained on the production cross section of new resonances, including HVT W' and Z' bosons, the bulk RS radion and graviton, and the 2HDM pseudoscalar A boson. Figure S.4 shows the expected upper limits on the production cross section of the HVT Z' → WW in two production modes: Drell-Yan (DY) and vector boson fusion (VBF).

Upper limits are the standard way to present resonance search results; they define the exclusion region: for a given mass, cross sections above the expected limit are excluded at 95% confidence level. The goal is to push these limits as low as possible, thereby excluding more of the BSM parameter space. The figure also shows the theoretical predictions for the HVT Z' production cross section in three different HVT models. HVT models A and B are produced via the DY process, with model A decaying mainly to quarks and leptons, and model B to SM gauge bosons. Model C targets the VBF production mode. Comparing the expected limits with these predictions allows the expected mass exclusion limit to be determined. For example, in the DY production mode, the expected mass exclusion limit for the HVT Z' is around 3.0 TeV for model A and around 3.3 TeV for model B (see Figure S.4, left). In the VBF production mode, the theoretical prediction lies below the expected limit for the whole mass range, and thus no mass exclusion limit can be set (see Figure S.4, right).

Results are presented as limits only if no significant excess of events is observed in the data. An excess would indicate a discrepancy between data and SM predictions, potentially hinting at new physics. Since the analysis remains blinded, conclusions about the presence of an excess cannot yet be drawn. Nevertheless, the expected results provide important information about the analysis sensitivity to new resonances.

Measurement of SM VV production and SMEFT interpretation

The measurement part of the analysis focuses on the SM VV production and uses an adjusted analysis strategy compared to the resonance search. Fewer analysis regions are used: some are excluded because they do not contribute to the measurement sensitivity, and others are merged to increase statistical power. Two configurations of the dominant V+jets background estimate are studied: one using a simulation-driven Monte Carlo (MC) estimate, and the other using a data-driven Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) method. A likelihood fit is performed to the conditional Asimov dataset in both configurations, and the expected signal strength is obtained. The signal strength µ is defined as the ratio of the measured cross section to the SM prediction; µ = 1 indicates perfect agreement with the SM. Because the analysis is still blinded, the expected signal strength is obtained from the Asimov dataset and equals 1, as the Asimov dataset was constructed assuming the SM. However, the expected uncertainty on µ provides a measure of the expected precision of the measurement. The expected signal strengths in the two fit configurations are:

µ_MC_VV = 1.00 +0.35 -0.32, µ_GPR_VV = 1.00 +0.17 -0.16. (S.1)

Figure S.5 shows the expected signal strength µ_VV and its uncertainty (total, statistical, and systematic) for each leptonic channel individually and combined. The total uncertainty is dominated by the systematics in both fit configurations, but the fit using GPR V+jets achieves nearly half the uncertainty of the MC-based fit. This improvement arises because the GPR method provides a more precise estimate of the dominant V+jets background.

The expected signal strength can be translated into the expected SM VV production cross section by multiplying it by the SM prediction for the cross section. Thus, the expected SM VV production cross section in the two fit configurations are:

σ_MC_VV = 194 +68 -62 pb, σ_GPR_VV = 194 +33 -31 pb, (S.2)

corresponding to expected significances of the signal above the background-only hypothesis of approximately 3 standard deviations (MC V+jets) and 7 standard deviations (GPR V+jets).

The measurement results are also interpreted in the SMEFT framework. This framework parametrizes the effects of new physics in a model-independent way by introducing higher-dimensional operators that modify the interactions of the SM particles. The interpretation is performed by including the effects of the dimension-6 OW operator in the likelihood fit and determining the confidence interval for the corresponding Wilson coefficient cW. The OW operator modifies the triple gauge boson couplings, which are directly probed in VV production. The fit considers only the pure EFT contribution, quadratic in cW, because the interference contribution (linear in cW) is highly suppressed in VV production. The expected 68% confidence level interval for cW is cW ∈ [−0.05, 0.05] in both MC and GPR fit configurations, indicating that the choice of the V+jets background estimate does not affect the expected sensitivity to SMEFT effects in the VV production.

The results of the resonance search part of the VV/Vh semileptonic analysis are expected to set competitive limits on the production cross section of new resonances decaying into VV/Vh pairs, thereby constraining the parameter space of BSM theories that predict such resonances. The measurement part demonstrates an improvement in precision for SM VV production compared to previous ATLAS measurements in semileptonic final states. The expected uncertainty on cW is comparable to those reported in global EFT combinations by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations. The final results of the VV/Vh semileptonic analysis will be unblinded in the near future, and they will provide valuable insights into the nature of the SM and possible new physics beyond it.

LOOKING FORWARD

Looking to the future, the VV/Vh semileptonic analysis presented in this thesis opens up several promising research directions. The most significant near-term advancement will come from the larger dataset expected in the coming years. With LHC Run 3 nearing completion and the High-Luminosity LHC scheduled for the next decade, the substantial increase in collision events with allow searches for new heavy particles to reach higher masses and increase the accuracy of precision measurements of SM processes. This is particularly important for probing the high-energy regions most sensitive to potential new physics effects, including those parametrized by the Wilson coefficient cW within the SMEFT framework.

Beyond simply collecting more data, several methodological improvements could significantly enhance future analyses. Recent advances in machine learning across ATLAS offer opportunities to improve event classification and background suppression, moving beyond the largely cut-based approach used here toward more sophisticated multivariate techniques. Incorporating information about the polarization of the vector bosons produced in these events, a direction not explored in the current work, could also increase sensitivity to different theoretical models, as various new physics scenarios predict different polarization fractions. Finally, the theoretical interpretation could be expanded in several ways: by including interference effects that are currently not accessible, by considering higher-dimensional operators beyond the leading dimension-6 contributions within the SMEFT framework, and by improving the simulation of dominant background processes. Together, these developments would provide a more comprehensive probe of the electroweak sector, potentially revealing subtle effects that the current analysis cannot yet access.
["GET
