This dissertation investigates the extent to which food forests in the Netherlands are economically viable and examines the discursive and governance conditions under which such viability emerges. Food forestry – an agricultural practice that mimics forest ecosystem dynamics to integrate food production with ecological restoration – has become increasingly prevalent in the Global North. Despite its multifunctional logic, public debates and research often evaluate food forestry through dominant frameworks that separate ‘economy’, ‘environment’, and ‘society’ – positioning economic value production as at odds with ecological and social values and thus constraining understandings of what constitutes economically viable food production. This dissertation challenges this by offering a relational, multispecies, and more‑than‑monetary conceptualization of economic viability, grounded in diverse economies thinking.

The central question guiding this project is: “To what extent, and under what conditions, are food forests currently economically viable?” This question requires interrogating the meaning of economic viability itself. Scientific and public debates deploy the term inconsistently – sometimes equating viability with short‑term financial profitability, and at other times approaching a diverse economies informed definition of economy as ecological livelihood. These divergent framings yield contradictory assessments: some studies emphasize limited market returns, while others foreground the multiple ways in which food forests sustain human and more‑than‑human communities. This dissertation rejects evaluations of alternative food economies that focus on their shortcomings and instead elucidates the generative capacity of actually existing economic practices – without romanticizing them.

To understand the conditions in which economically viable food forestry emerges, this thesis not only treats discourse, but also unpacks processes of food forestry governance. Conflicting interpretations of viability affect farmers’ access to subsidies and regulatory support, though research has largely overlooked the role of civil servants who interpret and enact these governance frameworks in practice. In the Dutch context – marked by institutional density, formalization, and regulatory complexity – these governance actors play a decisive role in shaping food forestry’s economic possibilities.

Theoretical and methodological approach
The dissertation conceptualizes economic viability as the constellation of ways ecological livelihoods are supported within food forests. Diverse economies thinking provides a foundation for examining economic practices that exceed market logics, but its reluctance to foreground structural constraints risks obscuring the wider political-economic and governance conditions shaping food forestry. To mitigate this, this dissertation combines diverse economies thinking with assemblage theory and analytics of affect. This theoretical assemblage enables a simultaneous focus on (1) the heterogeneous elements that constitute food forestry, (2) the affective relations through which governance and value frameworks are enacted, and (3) the multiple forms of economic relations that sustain human and more‑than‑human communities.

Methodologically, the dissertation adopts a post-structuralist Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach. Research itself is treated as a world‑making practice in which researcher and participants co‑produce knowledge. The project rejects ‘matters of fact’ in favor of shared ‘matters of concern’, emphasizing reflexivity and attentiveness to the performative effects of research. Building on diverse economies scholarship, the project integrates participatory, iterative, and action‑oriented modes of inquiry – collaborating with farmers, civil servants, and civil society actors as co‑researchers and attending to how research practices materially and discursively support food forestry.

Summary of findings
The dissertation consists of a scoping review and four empirical chapters that gradually deepen the conceptualization of economic viability and its enabling conditions.

Chapter 2 systematically reviews temperate food forestry research across nine thematic clusters, developed through participatory sessions with a network of food forestry scholars, revealing major gaps concerning (1) food production in food forests, (2) their multifunctionality, and (3) epistemological tensions between dominant scientific methods and relational knowledge practices. These gaps highlight the need for conceptual and methodological approaches that capture the complexity of food forestry and its socio‑ecological entanglements.

Chapter 3 addresses these gaps through an assemblage‑theoretical exploration of food forestry in the Netherlands. A survey (n=109), informal conversations with experts (n=5), and a mapping exercise elucidated diverse motivations, practices, and values among Dutch farmers, many of whom prioritize non‑monetary contributions such as ecological restoration, education, or community building. It also shows that infrastructural factors – governance frameworks, land access, finance, networks, and knowledge systems – critically shape how food forests develop. These findings underscore the need for thick description and weak theory to account for the heterogeneous and contested dynamics of food forestry.

Chapter 4 reframes economic viability through diverse economies thinking. Extensive ethnographic fieldwork at four Dutch food forests shows that they are economically viable through a range of monetary and non‑monetary relations – self‑provisioning, bartering, design services, care for more‑than‑human communities – even when they generate little direct financial profit. Farmers frequently adopt relational ontologies and pluralistic epistemologies, which clash with the neoliberal and positivist assumptions embedded in institutional infrastructures. This tension, rooted in dominant expectations of agricultural profitability and growth, produces structural pressures onto to food forestry practices.

Chapter 5 examines food forestry governance as an affective and relational process. Drawing on interviews with civil servants across different administrative levels (n=14) and employing analytics of affect, it demonstrates that governance outcomes hinge on individual discretion, interpretive repertoires, and varying degrees of willingness or capacity – all of which are shaped through affective encounters (e.g., with colleagues or farmers). The fragmented and emergent nature of food forestry governance creates opportunities for farmers who can strategically align their initiatives with existing frameworks, yet it also produces inconsistency and unequal access to support.

Chapter 6 traces how the binary of commercial-non‑commercial food forestry emerges across the realms of academic literature, governance, civil society, and farming practices themselves. This binary reproduces a tripartite division of value – economic, ecological, and social – privileging commercial agriculture (associated with economic values) while marginalizing non‑commercial forms (associated with social and ecological values). Yet the chapter shows that both categories are internally diverse: commercial food forests generate substantial ecological and social value, while non‑commercial food forests contribute meaningfully to economic livelihoods. By exposing these contradictions, the chapter demonstrates how food forestry destabilizes reductionist epistemologies and challenges capitalocentric logics.

Overall contributions
The dissertation shows that the economic viability of food forestry cannot be reduced to metrics of financial profitability. Instead, it emerges from the interplay of diverse economic practices, ecological processes, and governance relations that sustain human and more‑than‑human livelihoods. The main obstacles to viability lie not within food forestry itself but in the institutional and discursive architectures that fail to recognize or support these practices. By integrating diverse economies thinking, assemblage theory, and affect-oriented analysis within a PAR framework, this dissertation contributes to food forestry research, agri-food studies more broadly, and diverse and community economies scholarship. It advances a more holistic, justice‑oriented understanding of economic viability – reclaiming this concept from hegemonic and reductionist interpretations that marginalize food forestry and other alternative food initiatives. On top of that, it highlights the need for policy and governance frameworks that accommodate the relational, multispecies, and more‑than‑monetary realities of economically viable food production.
["GET
