Het groeiende momentum om olifantencorridors veilig te stellen is sterk be\u00efnvloed door twee edities van het rapport Right of Passage: Elephant Corridors of India (Menon et al. 2005, 2017), waarvan de laatste 101 olifantencorridors identificeert die bescherming behoeven om de beweging van olifanten te vergemakkelijken. Ondanks methodologische kritiek heeft het rapport de inspanningen ge\u00efntensiveerd om corridorgronden juridisch veilig te stellen, waarvan vele overlappen met landbouwvelden en dorpen. Hoewel de instandhoudingsbiologie corridors kadert als technische oplossingen voor habitatfragmentatie, betoogt dit proefschrift dat het sociaal-politieke projecten zijn. Ondanks hun problematische inzet als vlaggenschipsoort, mobiliseren olifanten financiering, wakkeren ze het publieke sentiment aan en consolideren ze institutionele allianties, waardoor de autoriteit op het gebied van natuurbescherming wordt versterkt. Tegen de achtergrond van de agrarische nood na de liberalisering \u2013 gekenmerkt door dalende publieke investeringen, schuldenlast, commodificatie van land en ecologische onzekerheid \u2013 laat het proefschrift zien hoe het maken van corridors samenvalt met rurale precariteit. Ik introduceer het concept van de Conservation Agrarian Squeeze (CAS) om te beschrijven hoe agrarische achteruitgang en de uitbreiding van natuurbescherming samenkomen, waardoor een dubbele druk ontstaat voor boeren in de buurt van beschermde gebieden. De studie vraagt hoe corridors territoria herconfigureren en wat dit onthult over territorialisering en staatsmacht. Op basis van de politieke ecologie en agrarische politieke economie worden corridors geanalyseerd als technieken van ruimtelijke ordening die de regulerende controle uitbreiden tot buiten beschermde gebieden via kartering, wetgeving en deskundige kennis. Hoewel corridors vaak uitsluitingslogica's reproduceren, openen ze ook betwiste ruimtes voor onderhandeling, onder meer via de Forest Rights Act (2006). Olifantencorridors komen zo naar voren als belangrijke arena's waar territorium, kennis, kapitaal en autoriteit worden samengebracht en betwist in het hedendaagse India.","summary":"This thesis examines the making and governance of elephant corridors in southern India as a lens through which to understand how contemporary conservation territorializes rural landscapes and agrarian livelihoods, while consolidating state power. The growing momentum to secure elephant corridors has been strongly influenced by two editions of the report Right of Passage: Elephant Corridors of India (Menon et al. 2005, 2017), the latter of identifies 101 elephant corridors requiring protection to facilitate elephant movement. Despite methodological critiques, the report has intensified efforts to legally secure corridor lands, many of which overlap with agricultural fields and villages. While conservation biology frames corridors as technical solutions to habitat fragmentation, this thesis argues they are socio-political projects. Despite their problematic deployment as a flagship species, elephants mobilise funding, galvanise public sentiment, and consolidate institutional alliances, thereby reinforcing conservation authority. Set against post-liberalisation agrarian distress \u2013 marked by declining public investment, indebtedness, land commodification, and environmental uncertainty \u2013 the thesis shows how corridor-making intersects with rural precarity. I introduce the concept of the Conservation Agrarian Squeeze (CAS) to describe how agrarian decline and conservation expansion converge, placing dual pressures on farmers near protected areas. The study asks how corridors reconfigure territory and what this reveals about territorialisation and state power. Drawing on political ecology and agrarian political economy, corridors are analysed as techniques of spatial ordering that extend regulatory control beyond protected areas through mapping, law, and expert knowledge. While often reproducing exclusionary logics, corridors also open contested spaces for negotiation, including through the Forest Rights Act (2006).
