SOECs represent a promising technology for balancing the fluctuating energy output of renewable sources, while also enabling the sustainable production of key chemical intermediates such as syngas for the production of chemicals and fuels. Compared to alternative electrochemical technologies, SOEC offer high electrical efficiencies, faster electrode kinetics by operating at a higher temperature range (500-1000°C), while being compatible with a wide feedstock range. However, one of the challenge towards economic viability is to carry out significant improvements in the electrochemical performance of the individual cell components, including the cathode, electrolyte, and anode. The state-of-the-art Ni-YSZ cermet cathode, though highly active, suffers from degradation phenomena such as nickel agglomeration and depletion, carbon deposition, sulphur poisoning, and redox instability. Similarly, the anode is prone to species migration (Sr, Co), delamination from the electrolyte or barrier layers, mechanical cracking, and poisoning.

Redox stable perovskite oxides with MIEC properties have emerged as attractive alternatives due to their stability and versatility, offering the potential for simplified symmetric SOEC (SSOEC) configurations where one material can function as both cathode and anode. To further improve SSOECs, redox exsolution provides a powerful strategy to enhance electrocatalytic activity by decorating the bifunctional perovskite surface with finely dispersed and socketed nanoparticles with superior properties than their counterparts prepared by conventional infiltration methods. Alongside materials optimization, the overall energy efficiency of SOEC systems can also be enhanced by employing alternative anode feeds such as hydrocarbon fuels rather than air.

This work investigates the effect of redox exsolution on SFM-based perovskites on electrochemical performance and product selectivity under various SOC operating conditions and cell configurations, aiming to enhance renewable syngas production in SOEC systems. Chapter 1 introduced SOEC technology, describing its technological and energetic advantages, the structure and function of individual cell components, the current state-of-the-art, key challenges, and potential strategies for improvement, thereby establishing the foundation for subsequent chapters. It also gives the outline of the thesis. It also presents the thesis outline, which proceeds by first optimizing the cathode under steam-CO2 conditions, then tailoring the exsolution process on the electrode materials and optimizing the anode under ethanol conditions, and finally integrating the optimized electrodes in a symmetrical configuration.

Employing bifunctional, redox-stable, and MIEC perovskite oxide electrocatalysts in symmetrical configurations simplify fabrication and reduce production costs of SOCs and enable flexible operation as fuel cells, electrolyzers, or chemical cogenerators. The performance of SSOCs can be further enhanced through the decoration of MIEC electrodes with catalytically active and sintering- or coking tolerant nanoparticles generated via the redox exsolution method. Chapter 2 examines the synergy between exsolution and SSOC technologies by reviewing recent developments in nanoengineered MIEC perovskites, categorized into single, double, and layered structures. It discusses the characteristics of the exsolved particles such as transition metals, alloys, and oxides and their interaction with the host perovskite lattice, emphasizing the role of various driving forces used to induce exsolution. The chapter concludes by identifying emerging opportunities in material design, cell pretreatments, and structural engineering that could address existing challenges and advance SSOC technology toward commercial implementation.

As reviewed in chapter 2, the double perovskite, molybdenum-doped strontium ferrite (Sr2.0Fe1.5Mo0.5O6±δ, SFM) is a material distinguished by its high redox stability, MIEC properties, intrinsic catalytic activity and can be employed as parent oxide for exsolution strategies. SFM offers a promising alternative to overcome the limitations of conventional Ni-YSZ cermet fuel electrodes in SOEC reactors. In chapter 3, SFM-based electrodes were further functionalized through controlled Fe and FeNi alloy nanoparticle exsolution, achieved via Ni doping and A-site deficiency. In-situ NEXAFS analysis at 420 °C under reducing conditions revealed that these modifications promote Fe exsolution and facilitate the formation of Fe-rich or Ni–Fe alloy nanoparticles, with their composition governed by the perovskite stoichiometry. Electrochemical evaluation demonstrated that both doping and exsolution significantly decreased polarization resistance, resulting in enhanced electrical efficiency during H2O-CO2 co-electrolysis (25% H2O, 25% CO2) without the need for protective H2 or CO gas. Notably, Ni doping combined with FeNi3 exsolution improved the electrocatalytic performance of bare SFM by nearly threefold, achieving current densities up to 1.3 A·cm-2 at 1.6 V and 800 °C in a ZrO2-based electrolyte-supported configuration. Complementary surface characterization indicated increased CO2 adsorption capacity in the modified electrodes, correlating with the observed performance enhancement. This chapter provides critical insights into the synergistic effects of rational doping and redox exsolution in tailoring MIEC perovskite electrodes and their electrochemical performance as cathode in steam CO2 atmosphere.

Exsolution is a key surface functionalization strategy with enhanced control of particle size, population density, and metal-support interactions, thereby directly impacting catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability. Chapter 4 is focused on Sr2.0Fe1.3Mo0.5Ni0.2O6±δ (SFMNi) and the influence of reductive environment on redox exsolution with particular focus on ethanol steam reforming, which affects the formation, distribution, and composition of catalytically active nanoparticles on the perovskite surface. Conventional ex-situ reduction at 750-800 °C in humidified hydrogen produced bimetallic Ni-Fe nanoparticles with limited H2 and CO formation rates (6.7-9.6 and 2.6-3.1 mol·min-1 gcat-1, respectively). In contrast, operando exsolution during ethanol steam reforming generated uniformly distributed FeNi3 nanoparticles (~14.2 nm, 894 μm-2), resulting in significantly enhanced syngas production (18.5 molH2·min-1 gcat-1 and 6.3 molCO·min-1 gcat-1) and improved coking tolerance. These nanoparticles remained the sole precipitated phase, maintaining excellent catalytic stability for over 100 h. This chapter highlights the critical role of exsolution conditions in forming active and stable heterostructures, demonstrating the superiority of operando exsolved nanoparticles over conventional hydrogen induced exsolution.

Chapter 5 builds on the insights developed in Chapters 3 and 4, applying them to the anode of ethanol-powered solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Here, SFM based electrodes were employed to generate operando exsolved FeNi3 nanoparticles, significantly enhancing catalytic activity, chemical stability, and coking tolerance. Ni doping increased surface basicity and oxygen vacancy concentration, promoting ethanol steam reforming via dehydrogenation pathways, in contrast to the dehydration-dominated behavior of undoped SFM. Thermocatalytic studies confirmed the high ethanol reforming activity and remarkable coking resistance of the FeNi3 nanoparticles through crystallographic and Raman analyses. These features led to over 30% improvement in peak power density, with stable operation maintained for 70 h. Overall, the chapter highlights the strong coupling between thermocatalytic reforming and electrochemical performance, demonstrating that nanoparticle-functionalized perovskite electrodes offer a promising strategy for efficient and flexible SOFCs on renewable fuels.

Building on the preceding chapters, which demonstrated that Ni-doping enhances the electrochemical performance and bifunctionality of SFM perovskites, chapter 6 explores Ni-Fe nanoparticle-decorated SFMNi electrodes in SSOEC for ethanol-assisted co-electrolysis of H2O and CO2. Introducing ethanol to the anode at 750 °C significantly lowered the open-circuit voltage, reducing the energy input required while enabling simultaneous electricity generation and syngas production at low current densities. The electrodes exhibited selective oxidation of ethanol at the anode, producing syngas with an industrially relevant H2/CO ratio, while maintaining favorable composition at the cathode. Higher temperatures and increased ethanol concentrations further improved performance and expanded the region of simultaneous electricity and chemical production. At more negative current densities, undoped SFM showed higher ethanol partial oxidation selectivity, whereas SFMNi favored hydrogen oxidation due to strong adsorption on the exsolved Ni–Fe nanoparticles. Overall, these findings highlight that the surface chemistry of the perovskite and the presence of operando-exsolved nanoparticles play a decisive role in tuning anode selectivity and achieving a balance between energy efficiency and product distribution in ethanol-assisted solid oxide electrolysis.

The present thesis concludes that ethanol-assisted SOECs could be a sustainable alternative for enabling efficient syngas production while simultaneously generating electricity, highlighting the strong potential of co-generation strategies. Maximum syngas formation was achieved at low current densities, where high PEO product selectivity and favorable cell voltages minimize energy demand, resulting in significantly lower operational costs compared with unassisted electrolysis. Across the broader voltage range, industrially relevant H2/CO ratios (1.7-2.6) were maintained, although higher current densities shift selectivity from PEO to CEO products, reducing anode syngas formation. Expanding operation in the co-generation region with high syngas productivity at the anode may be achieved by improving electrode kinetics or optimizing cell design. Long-term stability is limited by carbon formation at the anode, underscoring the need for electrodes with enhanced coking tolerance. A-site deficiency may increase Fe content in exsolved Ni-Fe nanoparticle and enhance oxidation capacity and suppress carbon deposition. Overall, these findings highlight the interplay between electrode chemistry, catalysis and interfacial engineering, emphasizing their importance for boosting sustainable electrochemical syngas production in SOEC reactors.
["GET
