When Proefschriftmaken.nl is going to print your thesis, there are two production methods, offset printing and digital printing. This choice is mainly depending on the number of books that need to be made. Under the heading ´Printing methods´ the differences between offset and digital printing are explained. You can choose your own type of paper and combine colour pages in your thesis. Is the required information not on our website, or you want to discuss your wishes? Please contact us.
Proefschriftmaken.nl uses both digital printing (so called print on demand) as offset printing (traditional printing). Printing on demand is ideal for printing dissertations and is also often used to reproduce books that are out of stock. With runs to about 500 books, it is often cheaper to print digitally. Of course it is still possible to produce a smaller number of books offset, this will sometimes be only more expensive. Digital printing offers even more options and flexibility, if you want to work with colour pages. How you want to produce your dissertation depends on various options. Things that might influence your decision are budget, number of books, delivery time and the number of colour pages. Next you find some more info on the two printing methods.
This is the old way of printing using plates and printing presses. Offset printing is price competitive comparing to digital printing when about 500 books are printed. 16 or 32 pages are printed together in big sections. The quality is tested and the binding, often stitched bound, is very solid. The use of colour pages in your thesis is usually more expensive than with digital printing. Also in offset printing colour pages are not distributed through the thesis, but should be bundled together in one or more colour sections.
Digital printing is a relatively new technology, where books are printed instead of pressed. To realize the printing, only PDF files are used. Because this process does not need anything else, this method is considerably faster and cheaper. Digital printing can be done in black, colour or a combination of both. The colour pages can be placed randomly through the book. The digital process also has the advantage that smaller quantities can easily be printed (as is often the case with PhD theses) and you do not unnecessarily have to keep books in stock. The quality of digital printing has greatly improved in recent years, making the difference in quality between offset and digital printing now insignificant. Books are usually finished with a perfect binding (glued bound). Other bindings like stitched bound are also possible.
At Proefschriftmaken.nl we use two different methods to bind your publication, namely perfect binding (glued bound) and stitched bound (sewn bound). The specifications of both methods are described.
At Proefschriftmaken.nl, most books have a perfect (glued) binding. This finishing type has the shortest processing time. The quality of finishing has greatly improved in recent years and guarantees a strong and durable binding. This form of binding is applicable for almost every type of paper.
With this type of binding, the book is divided in sections of 16 pages. The sections are sewn together and then glued into to cover. The advantage of a Stitched Bound book is very strong and more durable than Perfect Binding. The disadvantage is the higher price and the fact that processing takes a longer time.
Biotopis a type of paper mainly used for books with only black or grey scale text and images, such as a pocket book. Books browse easily and the paper has an off-white/yellowish colour. G-print is used in books with a combination of text and colour images in a nice layout. The colour of the paper is white. HVO is standard Wood-free Offset paper, similar to the regular printer paper, of course with better quality.
The books Proefschriftmaken.nl supplies are equipped with a matt or gloss laminate. This is to protect the cover of the book, and also as decoration. A glossy laminate is particularly suitable when a photo or many different colours are used on your cover. A matt laminate gives a more professional look, especially when design has only one or two colours. Matt and gloss laminate are standard, but there are other ways to decorate your cover. For instance UV varnish looks very nice. It is a combination of a matt cover with at specific points a gloss varnish.
